Abstract

Nowadays plenty of attention is paid to recognition of all atherogenic risks. Recently paraoxonase 1 has been joined to all widely known atherogenic factors. This enzyme influences HDL and LDL fractions, prevents them against oxidation, which in consequence is prevention of atherosclerotic lesions. PON1 has a particular impact on HDL fraction to which it is bounded. Antioxidant action of PON1 was also confirmed on models of animal which were lacking of this gene. There have been many genetic and non-genetic factors described which have influence on activity of PON1. Because of low PON1 activities in some medical conditions it is assumed that its reduced activity may be the cause of atherogenic lesions and may also be a risk factor of cardio-vascular diseases.
