Abstract

Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess students’ knowledge of dental prophylaxis and opinion on the implementation of the subject.

Materials and methods: An electronic survey was conducted from July to November 2015 on a group of 200 students of dentistry. The subjects were divided to according whether they have already done dental prophylaxis or have not had the program content yet.

Discussion: Respondents who did not take dental prophylaxis classes have high expectations regarding the subject. This includes desire to acquire knowledge and use it in practice. The vast majority (92%) of students who have already completed the course, want to improve their knowledge by participating in courses and training.

Conclusions: Survey results can provide a useful guidance for dental prophylaxis lecturers. Students clearly indicate that subjects such as oncological prevention and oral injury prevention are insufficiently discussed. Despite the fact that the time devoted to the subject was sufficient for many respondents, most of students feel the need to broaden their previous nowledge.
