Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of surgical treatment of flexor tendon injury. The study group contained 46 patients treated in The Department of Orthpaedic Surgery of the Medical University of Gdańsk between September 1999 and April 2004. The conclusion was made after comparing results in various groups of patients. The material was divided into groups according the method of treatment, injury zone, age of patient and presence of coexisting injuries. The results were classified with Buck-Gramcko method and compared within groups. In the study material injuries were observed most often in zone II and III according to Kleinert-Nigst classification. The interpretation of physical examination and three grips strength (hand grip, key grip and pinch grip) showed that injuries of the flexor tendon lead to permanent deterioration of the hand function and loss of the hand strength. When analyzing different treatments used; the primary delayed suture technique delivered the best results. At the same time, a lower percentage of poor results was observed in zone IV. The outcomes of patients younger than 18 years proved that young age of the patient is a favourable prognostic factor. The group of patients with the presence of associated injuries delivered worse results than the group with isolated flexor tendon injuries.
