Abstract

The aim of the study was to evaluate the incidence of intraoperative floppy iris behavior during cataract extraction with the use of α-1-antagonists and in relation to diabetes mellitus and systemic hypertension. Methods: 209 eyes of patients undergoing cataract extraction were prospectively enrolled. The floppy iris syndrome was observed during surgery. The surgeon was not aware of patient’s medication or disease history. Results: 16 patients showed the symptoms of IFIS, all tamsulosin patients presented them in the full triad of symptoms. Conclusions: Patients taking tamsulosin showed floppy iris syndrome. IFIS was also noted during operations in patients with diabetes, congestive heart failure and hypertension.
