Kornel Michejda – prekursor powojennej chirurgii gdańskiej

Abstract

The aim of this paper is to present the figure of professor Kornel Michejda, who organised the I Surgical Department after the Second World War .

The material comes from archival records, printed papers and interviews with surgeons and people working with the professor .

After his arrival to Gdańsk professor Kornel Michejda formed the I Surgical Department on the basis of the Surgical Ward in Gdańsk, Dębinki street which dealt with general and other fields of surgical issues: pediatric orthopedic surgery – dr Alojzy Maciejewski, neurosurgery – dr Stanisław Ziemnowicz, urology – dr Tadeusz Lorentz.

During formation of that Department, professor Kornel Michejda took part in the Inauguration Ceremony of the first academic year on 2nd February 1946 and he also organised the first post-war Congress of Polish Surgeons in July 1946. He left Gdańsk in 1948.

During his professional career he was connected with Kraków, Wilno and Gdańsk sot he is called the professor of three universities. Although he worked only three years in Gdańsk, he played a meanigful role in the development of Gdańsk’s Surgery.
